Benefits and Facts about Applying Lime

Soil Testing:

The best way to determine the amount of lime to apply is by obtaining a soil sample and testing it for Ph.  Ph is measured on a scale of 1 to 14, with 1 being the most acidic and 14 being the most basic.  For most crops a Ph of 6.5 to 7 is the most ideal.  However, this will vary somewhat depending on the crop.

Frequency:

The frequency in which lime should be applied varies depending on the soil conditions.  It will also vary based on the crop that is grown.  On average, lime should be applied once every three years.

Quantity:

Although a soil test is the most accurate way to obtain the amount of lime that is required, a typical application for most of Western Pennsylvania is 2 tons per acre.

Types of Lime:

We offer our customers two types of lime, Dolomite and Calcium.  Dolomite contains a higher level of magnesium than does calcium.  However, it maintains a fairly high percentage of calcium.  For more information on this topic please view the chemical analysis of these products.  Dolomite Analysis     Calcium Analysis
